Attorney Profile
My name is Richard L. Williams, I am a member of the State Bar of Michigan, license #P-29583, admitted to practice in October, 1978.
I have always been in the private practice of law since acceptance into the Bar. My principal areas of focus have always been trial advocacy and business organizations. I attained Diplomate status with the Court Practice Institute in Chicago, Illinois in 1978. I worked at the Michigan Department of Commerce, Corporation and Securities Division, Franchise Registration for two years prior to taking the bar exam. During that time I was also the chief legal clerk for Circuit Court Judge Paul Mahinske in Howell, Michigan.
Prior to law school I opened a delicatessen/restaurant business in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Catering became a mainstay to the operation and we were awarded the Milwaukee Bucks contract for home games since the NBA granted the franchise. My interest was sold when I moved my family to Michigan to enter law school.
I was born in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, New York in 1947. My father owned his own newspaper and was a printer by trade, and my mother was a dietician. I attended high school in Thompson, Connecticut at Marianapolis Preparatory School and graduated with a classical and a scientific diploma. I attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and received a BA degree with majors in history and chemistry, minors in economics and theology. I attended and graduated from Thomas Cooley Law School in May, 1978, and thereafter took and passed the bar exam. I am married and have seven children, six sons and one daughter. My outside interests include gardening, wilderness camping, playing and teaching music, cooking, writing and league bowling in the winter. I have a fondness for dogs.
In October, 2009 I began my 32nd year in practice. I have personally represented better than five thousand individuals in matters ranging from divorce, real estate, wills, corporations and personal injury/wrongful death to the criminally accused.
Today I primarily focus on driver license restoration, expungement of criminal records, criminal defense and setting up new businesses via corporation or otherwise. Other attorneys in my office each handle other areas ranging from civil litigation to bankruptcy to divorce, among others. The only areas which are not handled are admiralty and patent law (however, we do trademarks registrations).
If my office might be of assistance to you, please give us a call. The initial consultation about your situation is always free of charge and there you can learn of our strategy, the odds of prevailing, possible avenues of relief, and the costs involved. We always advise potential clients to receive at least two other opinions before choosing who to retain. We always cap the costs on flat rate cases at the initial meeting so not to have future unpleasant surprises, except in certain situations where expert witnesses need to be hired and/or depositions need to be taken. Lastly, if I take your case, I do your case.. and no one else! If I have a conflict with a higher court, my office adjourns the case to another date. We do not transfer or substitute other attorneys once retention is made. This is a firm matter of policy: who you retain is who stands next to you in court.
